The brand’s storied history is a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of its founder, Benjamín Menéndez García, whose journey from academia to the pinnacle of the cigar industry is as intriguing as the cigars themselves. Benjamín Menéndez García’s path to founding Montecristo began with an education at an American university, where he acquired the skills and knowledge that would later drive his success. After his studies, he was recruited by General Cigar, a leading company in the industry. However, his entrepreneurial spirit soon led him back to Havana, where he joined his brother Félix in the Parra company. In 1913, Benjamín and his brother took control of the company, renaming it Menéndez y Cía, signaling the beginning of a new era.

The journey to creating Montecristo began in 1923, when Benjamín and Félix’s uncle Alonso joined the business. Alonso brought with him a master cigar maker, “Pepe” García, whose expertise played a crucial role in shaping the brand’s future. With their sights set on expanding to international markets, the Menéndez y García partners acquired the Particulares cigar factory in 1935. It was in the same year that they decided to create a new brand, one that would exemplify luxurious sobriety and impeccable craftsmanship. Thus, Montecristo was born.

The origins of the name “Montecristo” are subject to various interpretations, but one thing is clear—the English influence, particularly from the Hunters company, played a significant role in convincing the Cubans of the name’s appeal. The name Montecristo evoked images of adventure and sophistication, resonating with cigar enthusiasts around the world.

In 1937, Alonso Menéndez acquired the H. Upmann factory, a move that allowed him to centralize all Montecristo production in one location. This consolidation facilitated greater quality control and consistency, contributing to the rapid success of the brand. By 1955, Montecristo’s reputation had grown to such an extent that the Bishop of Havana visited the factory to bless it, a testament to its prominence in Cuban culture.

Montecristo’s success extended beyond Cuban borders. The Alfred Dunhill company, responsible for distributing Montecristo in the United States and Great Britain, launched its own line under the name Montecristo Dunhill Seleccion Suprema in the 1940s. This line persisted until 1982, offering a unique selection that complemented the traditional Montecristo range.

Throughout the years, Montecristo continued to expand its offerings. In 1969, the Joyitas and Especial were added to the original five modules, Nos. 1 to 5, that had existed since 1935. The brand’s reputation for quality and innovation was further solidified in 1971 with the introduction of the legendary Montecristo A, a cigar that quickly became a favorite among enthusiasts.

Today, Montecristo remains one of the most revered brands in the Cuban cigar catalog. Its popularity endures in Havana and beyond, with cigar aficionados worldwide appreciating the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship, tradition, and a hint of luxury.
