History of La Flor de Cano
The history of La Flor de Cano dates back to the early 20th century in Havana. In 1932, Juan Cano Sainz and his wife Consuela began their journey by hiring a cigar roller to handcraft cigars on their kitchen
table. With the assistance of close relatives, their endeavour evolved into a successful family business. In 1936, they officially registered the brand in Spain, which became their primary export market. In 1939, their son Ernesto joined the business.
In the early 1950s, the company invested in cigar-making machinery. Subsequently, in the 1960s, the family relocated to the United States, where Ernesto pursued a thriving career in the cigar industry.
Despite their move, La Flor de Cano cigars continued production in Cuba. While there was a brief period from 1988 to 1992 when a small range of hand-made sizes were produced, the focus remained on machine-made sizes. However, in recent times, there has been a shift towards short filler, handmade sizes.
When making the blend for short filler Habanos, the cigar roller combines with other selected chopped tobacco leaves and rolls the filler into full-length binder leaves with the aid of a flexible mat fixed to his bench to form a firm bunch. The wrapper is applied by hand in the normal fashion.

The Beginning
The La Flor de Cano Elegidos cigar starts with a hint of sandalwood as I light the cigar up, and it remains.
The Middle
The sandalwood note persists, now accompanied by subtle hints of almond.
The End
The flavour profile includes sandalwood, almonds, and a pronounced burst of black pepper.
Burn & Draw
La Flor de Cano Elegidos burns hasty and fairly sharp, with a firm and stable white ash. It is fairly firm and a little uneven when lightly squeezed. The draw was spot on, with good smoke output.
Overall
The cigar offers a nostalgic journey with its sandalwood and almond hints in the beginning and a crescendo of black pepper towards the end. Its burn is steady and sharp, producing a firm and stable ash, while the draw is impeccable with satisfying smoke output. While not overly complex, it exemplifies the pure and robust flavours of Cuban tobacco.

What alcoholic drink would I pair the La Flor de Cano Elegidos Cigar with?
The La Flor de Cano Elegidos Cigar will pair fantastically with Havana Club Seleccion de Maestros Cuban Rum (70cl / 45%).
A relaunch of Havana Club’s Cuban Barrel Proof edition, Seleccion de Maestros has benefited from an eye-catching packaging upgrade and is bottled at 45% for extra oomph. The Gold Medal-winning liquid inside Havana Club Seleccion de Maestros remains the same as for the old Cuban Barrel Proof – as the name suggests, the casks have been hand-picked by the maestros roneros from the company’s finest aged stocks. The rums selected by the maestros roneros are finished in special casks chosen for their aromatic properties before being bottled at a higher strength than the standard range for a more intense, immediate flavour on the palate.
What soft drink would I pair the La Flor de Cano Elegidos Cigar with?
Appletiser works well, its crisp apple flavour providing a delightful contrast to the rich tobacco notes.
Would I smoke the La Flor de Cano Elegidos Cigar again?
Given its rustic charm and unique pepper accent, this cigar would be a welcomed choice for another smoking session, particularly for those fond of exploring the classic allure of Cuban cigars. I would happily smoke another one.
