Magnum 48 is the third vitola of the 2009 H.Upmann releases , the third addition to the successful Magnum Series. Habanos wanted a a light to medium-flavoured smoke but our tasting notes revealed a small beast under its delicate aroma. The Magnum 48 come in SLB boxes containing 25 cigars.
Review #12: AUG 09 Thought it was high time to take another one of these for a spin. I was a bit worried that these might have gone a little flat but not a bit of it, it’s a lively little bugger! Aroma at cold was nondescript so I punched it, checked the draw and that was perfect. Then it was off to the races right from the first light! Strong, powerful and very, very flavourful! Immediately, woods, coffee bean and vanilla. Very spicy retrohale but nothing like unpleasant. Had a bit of uneven burn for the first half inch but I’ve had that before on these with their thick and quite unique (for CC) wrappers, but it caught up without any assistance and was spot on throughout the remainder.
Moving on it became a little less intense in terms of the strength and that spicy not but absolutely no less flavour with a nuttiness that was like an Almond/Brazil combo, also a very definite citrus peel note. Some dark but very creamy chocolate towards the end, I think, and absolutely zero bitterness. This one burned my fingers, a very pleasurable smoke and I’m very confident that’s there’s plenty left in them in still!! I was clearly wrong in my 2015 assessment below! Calling it a 93. – Submitted by Vortigan on May 30, 2024
Review #11: NOV 09 I believe this cigar is under rated. The sweetness creamy aroma has came out. – Submitted by Thomasduming on September 11, 2021
Review #10: — I really like these and think they have more aging potential than the Mag 46. I have been leaving these untouched for years now. The size is excellent and the draw will lead to great aromas and smoke when age allows the tobacco to settle. Early scores weren’t great but watch them climb in the future. Certainly a cigar you can find at a discount to other LE’s. – Submitted by cookj1 on May 4, 2017
Review #9: DEC 09 This June I was stocking up in Andorra at the cigar shop and I noticed a single box of these left on the shelf. I picked them up and the vendor told me it was the last box they had and weren’t getting anymore in. I don’t usually smoke Upmann but I thought what the hell. I was kind of looking for a 20-30 minute smoke anyway. Overall I am very pleased with them. They are quite short but pack a punch. The wrapper has a fantastic hue, kind of marbled. These have tons more flavour than most regular Upmann’s. If you can get some, buy them!! You won’t be disappointed. Construction has been great and I haven’t had a dud…yet. Very well priced for what they are. I have about 10 left now and I’ll be sad when they are finished. – Submitted by jumpfrog on October 21, 2016
Review #8: JUN 09 I don’t think this cigar is aging too gracefully,at least as it enters its sixth year at the point of writing. It’s constructed very nicely but doesn’t always burn well due to it’s unusually (for a Cuban) thick wrapper,it’s rather akin to a sungrown Nicaraguan I’d say.It now seems stronger than I remember it too.Very heavy on the woods in the first third and then giving up some fruity and dark, bitter chocolate notes later on. – Submitted by Vortigan on February 4, 2015
